Amman, Aug. 19 (Petra) — The Committee on Arab, International and Expatriates Affairs in the Senate expressed its strongest rejection and condemnation of the actions carried out by Israel, the occupying power, in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, involving killing, destruction, and displacement of Palestinian civilians.
According to a statement on Tuesday, the Committee said it “denounces the statements made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the so-called “Greater Israel” at the expense of Arab states’ territories, as well as the remarks of Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich calling for the continuation of unlawful and illegal settlement expansion in the West Bank, leading to the separation of its northern and southern parts and the obstruction of any genuine possibility for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.”
The Committee considered these Israeli statements and practices a flagrant and grave violation of international legitimacy resolutions, in direct contravention of the four Geneva Conventions of 1949, the Hague Regulations of 1907, and explicitly contrary to the Charter of the United Nations, in particular Article (2), paragraph (4), which obliges all Members to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
The Committee further affirmed that the maps and expansionist concepts being put forward, alongside the ongoing settlement, annexation, and aggression against the occupied Palestinian territories and the Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, constitute a direct threat to international peace and security. These actions systematically undermine the foundations of the peace process and eliminate the two-state solution, which the international community has endorsed as the only just and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian–Israeli conflict.
The Committee emphasized that such statements and actions are clearly and unequivocally inconsistent with Articles (2) and (3) of the Jordan–Israel Peace Treaty of 1994, threatening its very foundations. At the same time, they expose Israel’s true intentions of expansion, domination, and aggression, reaffirming that Israel has never pursued a just and comprehensive peace in the region. Israel shall bear full responsibility for extinguishing the prospects of peace and perpetuating instability in the region.
The Committee, while condemning these hostile positions, calls upon the international community and the Security Council to assume their legal and moral responsibilities, to stop the unjust war on the Gaza Strip, and to act immediately to end the occupation, enabling the Palestinian people to exercise their legitimate rights to freedom, independence, and the establishment of their independent state on the borders of 4 June 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In this regard, the Committee commends the positions of His Majesty King Abdullah II, may God protect him, in steadfast support of the Palestinian cause, and His continuous efforts to influence decision-making capitals within the international community to adopt positions supportive of the Palestinian cause and of the Palestinian people.
The Committee also affirms that Jordan derives its strength from its Hashemite leadership, its loyal people, its armed forces, its security agencies, and the unity of its sons rallying around the leadership. It further praises the decision of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah, may God protect him, to reinstate national service, representing a cornerstone in strengthening the internal front capable of confronting all challenges and threats.
