Munich Survive Augsburg Fightback to Secure Hard-Fought Bundesliga Victory
Munich,
31 Aug (ONA) — Luis
Diaz continued his fine goalscoring form with his second goal in as many
Bundesliga games as Bayern Munich held on for a 3-2 victory away at Augsburg.
While not the dominant display showcased against Leipzig last week, the reigning
champions demonstrated resilience in seeing out a hard-earned three points.
After
a slow start, Bayern gained the lead when Serge Gnabry powered home a precise
header from a delivery by England captain Harry Kane. Diaz then doubled the
advantage on the stroke of halftime, slotting home from close range after
Konrad Laimer pulled the ball back across the box.
Though
Augsburg created promising chances in the first period, their hopes were
further dampened shortly after the break when Michael Olise calmly finished
past goalkeeper Finn Dahmen to make it 3-0. The hosts refused to capitulate,
however, as Kristijan Jakic volleyed past Manuel Neuer to pull one back. Mert
Komur then expertly fired through traffic to bring Augsburg within a single
goal and set up a tense finale.
Despite
the spirited comeback, Bayern managed to stymie further attempts and saw out
the victory, though they will feel they should have extended their lead in the
closing stages.
In
other Bundesliga action, Erik ten Hag’s difficult start as Bayer Leverkusen
boss continued as his squad surrendered a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with
10-man Werder Bremen. Leverkusen appeared in control before the hosts staged a
stunning comeback with goals from Romano Schmid, Isaac Schmidt, and Karim Coulibaly.
