Jordan to export electricity to Syria, says Energy Ministry

Amman, Sept 3 (Petra) – The Jordan National Electric Power Company (JEPCO) is prepared to export electricity to Syria during off-peak hours in the Kingdom if the interconnection line is in place, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said Wednesday.

The Ministry said in its 2024 report that electricity had been supplied by the Irbid District Electricity Company to Nassib on the Syrian border, from the “Fils Al-Rif”, a Jordanian fund using a small fee (1 “fils”) on each kilowatt-hour of electricity consumption for rural electrification projects.

On the Jordanian-Saudi interconnection, the report indicated that the two countries have agreed on power linkage, operation, and maintenance.

The two sides are working on technical matters of a bilateral trade agreement for signing a final deal, and that the Saudis expressed a willingness to adopt the principle of cash trading instead of in-kind exchange.

Regarding a Jordan-Iraq electrical interconnection, the first phase of the 132 kilovolt (kV), 40 megawatt (MW) power line has been in place. The line between Jordan and the Rutba region in Iraq was up and running during the first quarter of 2024.

The second phase will have a capacity of 150-200 MW and a voltage of 400 kV with the Al-Qa’im region of Iraq. Construction of a 330 km medium-voltage line inside Iraqi territory to the Al-Qa’im region has been completed, in addition to completing the connection to the Al-Qa’im 132/400 kV station, said the report.

Work is underway to construct a 33/132/400 kV station in Al-Risha, Jordan. Civil work has begun in Al-Risha, along with engineering work to supply transformers, circuit breakers, and their accessories, and implement the 400 kV line to be operational this year.

On the Jordan-Egypt interconnection, the report said the Jordanian electricity grid had been connected to the Egyptian grid simultaneously since 1999, via a 400 kV submarine cable extending 13 km across the Gulf of Aqaba with a capacity of 550 megawatts. The electricity exchange contract between the two countries is renewed annually.

On a project to raise to 2,000 megawatts the capacity of the Jordan-Egypt interconnection line, the report indicated that an agreement was reached to re-study the economic and technical feasibility of the project and seek a new source of funding for the studies, at the request of the Egyptian side.
