Princess Muna calls for global solidarity on Alzheimer’s as Jordan hosts regional NCD conference

Amman, Sept. 4 (Petra) – Jordan on Thursday opened the Second Regional Conference of the Jordanian Society for the Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases under the patronage of HRH Princess Muna Al Hussein, who urged global action to confront Alzheimer’s disease and other chronic illnesses.

In a recorded message, Princess Muna – Honorary President of Alzheimer’s Disease International – called on communities worldwide to use September, World Alzheimer’s Month, to strengthen awareness and stand with patients, families, and caregivers.

“People with dementia deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and to be seen as individuals of value,” she said. “Let us all start with a simple step – asking questions about dementia and Alzheimer’s. Questions are the beginning of understanding and of real change.”

She noted that landmarks in many countries will be illuminated this month as a visible show of solidarity, while events ranging from memory walks and film screenings to awareness runs and seminars will aim to break stigma and foster dialogue.

The Amman conference, organized in partnership with the Jordan Medical Association, has drawn Jordanian, Arab, and international specialists to discuss the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory illnesses. The World Health Organization says NCDs account for more than 70 percent of deaths globally.

Health Minister Dr. Ibrahim Al-Bdour said Jordan is investing in advanced cardiac services, new technologies, and training programs to meet rising health challenges, while maintaining its role as a hub for regional medical tourism.

Jordan Medical Association President Dr. Issa Al-Khashashneh described the meeting as a vital platform for exchanging research and strategies, and Society President Dr. Suha Al-Ghoul highlighted Princess Muna’s decades of contributions to medicine and humanitarian causes.

Over three days, the program will feature more than 20 sessions, including a focus on Alzheimer’s care and caregiver support, a collaborative workshop with the King Hussein Cancer Center on pediatric cancer, and live regional dialogues on prevention.

The event also honors Jordan’s military medical services for their humanitarian role in Gaza and the West Bank. It is organized by Jo Events, a regional company specializing in international conferences and exhibitions.
