GAM Unveils Staircase Tourism Forums Highlighting Amman’s Historic Steps

Amman, Sep. 16 (Petra) – The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) on Tuesday launched a series of staircase tourism forums under the title “Amman’s Staircases: City of Historic Staircases” at the King Hussein Amphitheater in downtown Amman, aiming to preserve architectural heritage and promote historic landmarks.

The initiative, organized by the Amman Neighborhood Projects and Tourist Routes Directorate at GAM, seeks to rehabilitate and integrate the city’s staircases into cultural and tourism trails.

Acting Director of Amman City, Nabil Jariri, said the staircases represent Amman’s urban and cultural identity, noting the event highlights the city’s living memory and spirit.

Executive Director of the Amman Neighborhood Projects and Tourist Routes Directorate, Mohammad Abu Zeitoun, said the Municipality is implementing projects to protect, document, and rehabilitate heritage sites, while launching 13 tourist and cultural trails and developing educational programs to engage younger generations.

Head of the Scientific Organizing Committee, Mohammed Wahib, said Amman’s staircase tourism is the first of its kind in the Middle East, noting that the oldest staircase in the world, dating back to 6,000 BC, was discovered in Ain Ghazal.

The forums, held in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the local community, will continue regularly to strengthen Amman’s position as a regional and international tourism destination, he added.
