Amman, Sep. 28 (Petra) – The Public Security Directorate (PSD) and the Ministry of Environment signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Sunday to establish the Darak al-Sawaqa Forest in the Capital Governorate. The initiative aims to expand green spaces, conserve natural resources, and promote biodiversity, supporting Jordan’s national environmental and sustainability goals.
The MoU was signed by Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman and the PSD Director Major General Obaidallah Maaytah. Suleiman said the project forms part of the national plan to plant 10 million trees over 10 years, reduce carbon emissions, and cultivate a healthy and sustainable environment for citizens.
He highlighted the importance of inter-institutional cooperation in ensuring the success of major environmental projects and commended the PSD’s Royal Department for Environmental Protection for fostering a responsible environmental culture.
Major General Maaytah stressed that the agreement reflects the PSD’s commitment to comprehensive environmental security and supports national efforts through joint programs with the Ministry of Environment. He noted that the Directorate will continue providing technical and logistical support to ensure the success of environmental initiatives, enhancing Jordan’s role as a regional leader in biodiversity and conservation.
The project is part of broader national initiatives to increase vegetation cover, improve air quality, and combat climate change in line with Jordanian environmental policies and global sustainable development goals.
