Jordan Welcomes UNESCO’s Unanimous Adoption of Resolutions on Jerusalem

Amman, Oct. 10 (Petra)– The Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs welcomed the unanimous adoption by the UNESCO Executive Board of a resolution concerning the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls, under the agenda item titled “Occupied Palestine”, during the Board’s 222nd session held on Friday in Paris.

Ministry Spokesperson Fouad Majali said that the resolution reiterates the demand that Israel, as the occupying power, cease all illegal and unilateral measures in the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls actions that threaten the outstanding cultural and historical value of the city and place its cultural heritage at risk. The resolution, he added, considers such measures null and void.

Majali emphasized that the decision reaffirms Jordan’s consistent position regarding the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, including the Islamic and Christian holy sites, and the importance of preserving the historical and legal status quo.

He further noted that the resolution reaffirms the content of previous decisions adopted by both the UNESCO Executive Board and the World Heritage Committee concerning Jerusalem.
