New York, Oct. 14 (Petra) – The UN Security Council on Tuesday discussed the situation in Libya and heard a briefing from Hanna Tetteh, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya.
Tetteh said that Libya cannot afford “continued delays or obstruction” in implementing the roadmap laid out by the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
She noted that the Libyan House of Representatives and the High Council of State have yet to agree on a mechanism for reconstituting the High National Election Commission and have not discussed the constitutional and legal framework for elections both key milestones in the UN roadmap.
The roadmap calls for ending the transitional period, advancing the agreement on unified institutions, and holding free, fair, transparent, and inclusive presidential and parliamentary elections within 18 months. It also envisions a structured dialogue involving Libyan institutional actors and the Libyan people.
