Amman, Oct. 20 (Petra) – The European Union has approved a ban on Russian natural gas imports to EU countries by the end of 2027, in a measure proposed by the European Commission last spring, subject to discussion in the European Parliament.
The decision was approved by a majority of EU member states, with Slovakia and Hungary opposing, during a meeting of EU energy ministers in Luxembourg on Monday.
The EU has been seeking to reduce its reliance on Russian fossil fuels since the outbreak of the war between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022. While the bloc has fully halted its oil imports from Russia, it still depends on Moscow’s natural gas exports, which accounted for 19 percent of total EU gas imports in 2024, down from 45 percent in 2021.
