Vienna, January 15, 2026 (SUNA) – The Embassy of the Republic of Sudan in Austria organized a seminar on January 13, 2026, at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna, in collaboration with the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES), titled: “Sudan: Key to Africa’s Security – Humanitarian Disaster, Recovery, and Reconstruction.” The event aimed to shed light on the developments in Sudan and the challenges facing the recovery and reconstruction phase. In his speech, Sudan’s Ambassador to Austria, Magdi Ahmed Mufaddal, reviewed the internal and external factors hindering the efforts of the Government of Hope, highlighting the severity of the humanitarian crisis caused by rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia crimes and their impact on stability. He noted that the government’s return to the capital, Khartoum, followed the restoration of security after the city was liberated from the rebel control and the efforts to resume the functioning of state institutions. The Ambassador called on the international community to intensify pressure on the rebels and their sponsors, enhance engagement with Sudan, increase humanitarian assistance, and support recovery and reconstruction efforts. He also pointed to the role Austria could play in this regard through knowledge exchange, facilitating business operations, capacity building, and supporting education and the agricultural sector. The seminar was presented by the Director of the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna, Ambassador Dr. Martin Eichtinger, and moderated by the former Austrian Minister of Defence and President of AIES, Dr. Werner Fasslabend. In his remarks, Dr. Fasslabend stressed that Sudan is a cornerstone for regional security in Africa and that its stability and unity serve regional and international security interests, highlighting real opportunities to strengthen Sudanese-Austrian cooperation. The seminar was attended by a number of ambassadors, diplomats, researchers, and experts in European and security affairs, alongside representatives of the Sudanese community in Austria.
