Al-Dabbah, Jan. 16, 2026 (SUNA) – As part of his official visit to Sudan, Mr. Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and his delegation conducted an inspection of the Al-Affadh displaced persons’ (IDPs) camp today. During the visit, he met with a large number of displaced persons and reviewed the scope of services and support provided by the government.The delegation was accompanied by the Executive Director of Al-Dabbah Locality, Mohamed Sabir Kashkash, and representatives from the National Human Rights Mechanism.Executive Director Sabir welcomed High Commissioner Türk and the delegation, providing a briefing on the locality’s response to arrivals since the outbreak of the war. He stated that Al-Dabbah is hosting 32,000 families, with an additional 10,000 families residing in settlements across the area. He highlighted the role of the Sudanese community in supporting these families, most of whom have arrived from Darfur and Kordofan states. Sabir noted that some families still require shelter and that coordination is ongoing with state authorities and organizations. He praised local residents’ efforts in providing humanitarian assistance.Sabir also discussed the extensive services at Al-Affadh camp, including health and education programs. He described the involvement of various organizations and the operation of soup kitchens (Takaya), which have provided meals since the camp’s establishment. He emphasized that the needs of the IDPs continue to evolve, particularly in health and environmental sanitation.During the meeting, High Commissioner Türk emphasized his commitment to supporting the displaced and facilitating assistance. He noted the presence of multiple actors providing essential services, including the UN Human Rights Commission, and highlighted plans to establish a dedicated site to better coordinate aid. Drawing on his thirty years of experience in similar situations, he urged citizens to organize their affairs and regularize their status, and expressed hope for an end to the conflict in Sudan.The discussions also covered issues concerning arrivals at Azhari Al-Mubarak camp within Al-Affadh.In conclusion, Sabir reiterated the need for organizations to intervene and provide services, stressing ongoing efforts to empower families and support self-reliance.FA/BH
