European Council Calls for Extraordinary Meeting on Greenland TensionsBrussels, 19 Jan 2026 (ONA) — The European Council announced its intention to convene an extraordinary meeting of European Union leaders in the coming days, following a meeting of EU member state ambassadors in Brussels to discuss the latest developments related to tensions over Greenland The European Council meeting will be held “given the significance of recent developments and in order to further coordinate,” Council President Antonio Costa said on X. “Given the significance of recent developments and in order to further coordinate, I have decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in the coming days,” he said. Costa added that members also reaffirmed their shared assessment that tariffs “would undermine transatlantic relations and are incompatible with the EU-US trade agreement,” as well as their readiness to defend theirselves against any form of coercion and to continue engaging constructively with the US on all issues of common interest. Costa affirmed that his consultations with member states on the latest tensions over Greenland reconfirm their strong commitment to unity on the principles of international law, territorial integrity and national sovereignty, as well as unity in support of and solidarity with Denmark and Greenland. Costa also reconfirmed member states’ recognition of the shared transatlantic interest in peace and security in the Arctic, notably working through NATO. — Ends/AH
