Sudan Banks Union: Governor and Bank GMs Meeting in Khartoum Signals Capital’s Recovery

Khartoum, 24-1-2026 (SUNA) – The Sudan Banks Union (SBU) described the first meeting of Central Bank of Sudan (CBOS) Governor Amina Mirghani with bank General Managers in Khartoum on 23 January as a positive indicator of the capital’s recovery following the resumption of the bank’s operations there.Ahmed Abdel Rahman Al-Houri, SBU spokesperson, praised the swift attendance of managers, the meeting outcomes, and the efforts of the Central Bank and commercial banks to restore the sector after major disruption. He highlighted the new Banking Work Regulation Act, which strengthens governance, anti-money laundering measures, financial inclusion, and digital transformation.Meanwhile, Al-Houri highlighted the extensive damage the banking sector suffered during the militia rebellion. Of the sector’s 984 branches, 623—nearly two-thirds—were destroyed, plundered, or had their assets and cash seized. He added that 145 branches have since been rehabilitated, and banks have established 34 new branches. Currently, 513 branches are operational nationwide.Al-Houri affirmed that banks managed to absorb the shock and resume activities efficiently within a record period, with customers finding all deposits and account information intact and accessible at branches wherever they were located.He concluded by stressing that bank managements are working to normalize operations and provide the necessary arrangements for a return to Khartoum. He underscored that banks fully recognize the importance of this effort in light of the productive initiatives undertaken by the Higher Committee to create a conducive environment for citizens’ return to Khartoum State.BH/BH
