TSC Member Dr. Nuwara Affirms State’s Commitment to Making Khartoum an Attractive and Safe Environment for Voluntary Return

Khartoum, Jan. 26, 2026 (SUNA) – Member of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC), Dr. Nuwara Abu Mohamed Tahir, affirmed the state’s commitment to supporting all efforts to make Khartoum State an attractive and safe environment for voluntary return, capable of accommodating its citizens within a framework of environmental security, social stability, and sustainable development.Dr. Nuwara made the remarks on Monday while addressing the launch of the Environmental Initiative in Khartoum State, organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Sudan Office in coordination with the Supreme Council for Environment of the State. She said the initiative comes at a critical stage of national recovery, linked to environmental rehabilitation, which supports stability and creates the conditions for safe voluntary return based on freedom of choice.She emphasized that a healthy environment, basic services, and safe surroundings form a solid foundation for rebuilding communities and strengthening confidence in the future.Dr. Nuwara noted that voluntary return, at its core, is both humanitarian and national, ensuring the dignity of citizens, restoration of security, and provision of the means for a decent life, adding that environmental protection and rehabilitation are essential for achieving community stability and sustainable development.She further explained that the initiative reflects the state’s direction toward sustainable environmental recovery, strengthening national and international partnerships, and building institutional capacities to serve the interests of the country and its citizens while preserving natural resources for future generations.TSC Member, Dr. Nuwara, called on all stakeholders involved in environmental matters to unite efforts and act with shared responsibility to achieve comprehensive environmental recovery, safe and dignified voluntary return, and a more stable and prosperous future for Khartoum State and Sudan as a whole.Meanwhile, Wali of Khartoum State Ahmed Othman Hamza noted that the formation of the Supreme Committee for Preparing the Environment for the Return of Khartoum Citizens reflects the state’s concern and commitment to providing a decent life for returning citizens. He stressed the need to remove environmental hazards to enhance citizens’ sense of security and peace of mind, which the government aims to achieve promptly to encourage voluntary return. The Head of the Federal Supreme Council for Environment, Suleiman Al-Goni Suleiman Ali, emphasized the importance of rebuilding society on new values that prioritize the environment, and called for coordinated efforts and strengthened partnerships between government institutions and international organizations working on environmental issues to achieve sustainable urban development.The Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Environment in Khartoum State, Dr. Ghada Hussein Al-Awad, told reporters that Dr. Nuwara called on environmental organizations to provide necessary support for projects set to begin next week, focusing on water systems, ecosystems, renewable energy, and waste management.BH/BH
