Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Outlines International Partnerships and Comprehensive Plan to Rebuild Sudan’s Transport Sector

Port Sudan, Jan. 29, 2026 (SUNA) – The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Seif Al-Nasr Al-Tijani Haroun, unveiled an integrated plan to rehabilitate and develop Sudan’s transport sectors, emphasizing the role of international partnerships and private sector engagement in post-war reconstruction.In a statement to SUNA, the Minister said Sudan is preparing to host a Turkish delegation next February to discuss cooperation in ports and railways, praising Turkey’s readiness to engage in strategic transport projects. He highlighted Sudan’s participation in the Conference of Arab Transport Ministers and regional forums, alongside leveraging Egyptian expertise in roads, bridges, and urban development. Preparations are also underway for Sudan’s participation in the Sudan Reconstruction Conference in Jeddah.The Minister stressed the private sector’s central role in development, promoting investment through Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) projects and encouraging national capital to enter various transport fields.In aviation, he announced a national programme to modernize airports and create alternative air hubs, including a proposed airport in Butana. Support for Sudan Airways includes plans to acquire three aircraft through partnerships. Airports in Dongola, Al-Obeid, Kassala, and Marawi are also set for development to meet international standards.On roads and land transport, the Minister noted widespread infrastructure damage. Ongoing projects include the Haiya–Atbara–Port Sudan and Jebel Awliya–Kosti–Al-Obeid–Tandalti corridors, with new national roads planned, such as Port Sudan–Adré and Wadi Halfa–Al-Rank, enhancing trade links with neighbouring countries.Railway modernization, a metro project in Khartoum, and new bridge construction are also priorities to improve mobility and reduce congestion.In river transport, the Minister emphasized the strategic role of maritime navigation, including enhancing the Wadi Halfa link with Egypt and strengthening the Nile Valley Authority’s operations. Maritime transport plans include developing Red Sea ports, establishing specialized ports, and reviving the national maritime carrier to leverage Sudan’s strategic location in global trade.The Minister concluded by affirming that Sudan’s abundant resources and opportunities make transport sector development a cornerstone for rebuilding the national economy in the post-war period.AS/BH
