Sudanese Ambassador in Cairo Dismisses Claims of Restrictions on Sudanese Nationals

Cairo, Jan. 30, 2026 (SUNA) – Sudan’s Ambassador to Cairo, Imad al-Din Adawi, has dismissed circulating claims that the Sudanese government requested restrictions on Sudanese nationals in Egypt, describing them as unfounded.Speaking at a press conference held Thursday at the embassy in Cairo’s Fifth Settlement, Adawi urged Sudanese residents in Egypt to comply with Egyptian immigration laws, noting that every state has the sovereign right to regulate refugee and foreign residency matters. He said Sudan’s Ministry of Interior has begun enforcing immigration regulations and stressed the importance of adherence to those laws. He also expressed Sudan’s appreciation for the Egyptian government’s policies and decisions governing foreign residents, including Sudanese nationals, highlighting Egypt’s consideration of the large Sudanese influx since the outbreak of the war.Adawi underscored the special fraternal ties between Sudan and Egypt, clarifying that the ongoing measures by Egyptian authorities target the foreign presence as a whole, with Sudanese included as part of that broader category. He estimated the Sudanese presence in Egypt at around six million. He pointed to directives issued by President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC), General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, addressing several issues affecting Sudanese citizens following the war, including reductions in fees for numerous transactions in line with directives from the Minister of Labor. The ambassador extended thanks to the Arab Republic of Egypt, both government and people, for sustained coordination through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to address the needs and concerns of Sudanese residents. He said the embassy has proposed multiple practical solutions through ongoing engagement with relevant Egyptian authorities.Adawi clarified that the embassy is not responsible for initiatives related to the voluntary return of Sudanese nationals, noting that its role in this regard is limited to coordination. He also outlined Egypt’s residency regulations and the embassy’s role in providing support and coordination concerning measures affecting Sudanese residents. He further revealed that, through coordination with Egyptian authorities, the embassy facilitated the release of about 400 Sudanese detainees by paying fines and arranging their return to Sudan.AS/BH
