Liverpool Pursue Defensive
Reinforcements in Bid for Versatile Dutchman Geertruida

Liverpool, 1 Feb 2026 (ONA) — Liverpool
have opened discussions over a potential loan move for Dutch international
defender Lutsharel Geertruida, currently at Sunderland, as manager Arne Slot
seeks to bolster his defensive options ahead of the season’s climax.

The 25-year-old, who played under
Slot at Feyenoord before joining RB Leipzig, is considered a prime target. His
versatility is a key asset, with the ability to play competently at right-back,
center-back, and defensive midfield—a profile that addresses several squad
concerns for the Reds.

The move is driven by a significant
injury crisis in Liverpool’s defense. Conor Bradley has been ruled out for the
remainder of the campaign with a knee injury, Jeremie Frimpong is sidelined for
several weeks with a groin issue, and Ibrahima Konaté’s long-term future is
uncertain with his contract set to expire this summer.

However, the negotiations are
understood to be complex, involving three separate clubs: Liverpool, Sunderland
(where Geertruida is currently on a season-long loan), and his parent club, RB
Leipzig. A significant complicating factor is the reported absence of a recall
clause in Geertruida’s loan agreement with the Championship side, meaning any
transfer would require the full cooperation of Sunderland manager Régis Le
Bris.

The potential deal underscores
Liverpool’s urgent need for defensive cover as they navigate a challenging end
to the season across multiple competitions.
