Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation Discusses Production Challenges with Al-Rahad Scheme Farmers

Khartoum, February 3, 2026 (SUNA) – Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Professor Issmat Gurashi held talks with representatives of farmers from Al-Rahad Agricultural Scheme, in the presence of the Director of Al-Rahad Agricultural Authority, to review key challenges affecting operations and essential services at the project.The meeting addressed problems related to the Mina pumping stations, with the minister pledging to resolve the issue in coordination with the electricity authorities. He underscored the importance of installing two solar-powered pumps to ensure stable drinking water supplies for more than 250 villages in the Al-Faw and Al-Butana areas.Regarding preparations for the summer agricultural season, the minister stated that fuel supplies are stable and that required quantities have been approved. He directed the maintenance of dredgers and all project equipment through the Irrigation Sector’s Mechanical and Electrical Directorate, along with securing sufficient fuel to ensure readiness for the season.On financing, the minister stressed the need to provide funding to all Al-Rahad Scheme farmers through the Sudanese Agricultural Bank, in coordination with financing entities, to support the establishment of the summer season.Concerning the electricity shortage, he noted that discussions with the Minister of Energy and distribution authorities resulted in an agreement to operate the main drinking water pumps during the current phase until the Sennar Power Station enters service, ensuring uninterrupted water supply.At the conclusion of the meeting, farmers praised the ministry’s support, noting its significant role in the project’s recovery despite the exceptional conditions facing the country, and called for joint efforts to ensure agricultural stability and the success of the upcoming summer season.BH/BH
