Doha, March 02 (QNA) – The Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI) strongly condemned expansion of military operations in the region following Iranian missile attacks that targeted several Arab states, including Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan, as well as explosions in civilian areas that resulted in deaths and injuries due to missile fragments.
In a statement issued on Monday, the network said the escalation constitutes a direct threat to civilians and a clear violation of international humanitarian law, particularly the principles protecting civilian populations and prohibiting indiscriminate or disproportionate attacks. It stressed that targeting populated areas or civilian facilities, or the falling of missile debris in residential neighborhoods, represents a breach of states’ obligations during armed conflicts.
The network expressed solidarity with affected Arab states, affirming their right to take legitimate measures to protect their populations in accordance with international human rights standards, while prioritizing civilian safety.
It called on the United Nations, the United Nations Human Rights Council and the Special Rapporteurs to monitor developments, investigate potential violations and take the necessary steps to ensure accountability and prevent further expansion of the conflict. It also emphasized the need to halt escalation and return to diplomatic channels to safeguard civilian security and regional stability.
ANNHRI stressed that the protection of human dignity must remain central to any international action, and that regional security begins with safeguarding the rights of its peoples. (QNA)
