Khartoum, March 5, 2026 (SUNA) – In preparation for the launch of the birth dose of the Hepatitis B vaccine into the routine immunization schedule, the Federal Ministry of Health on Thursday organized a scientific forum at the main hall of its headquarters in Khartoum.Minister of Health Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim described the introduction of the birth dose of the Hepatitis B vaccine as a turning point in the efforts to confront Hepatitis B, noting that it had long been awaited. He said the step represents a new achievement for the Federal Ministry of Health and its concerned directorates, reflecting steady, scientific progress. The measure will help protect newborns from mother-to-child transmission of the disease and prevent infection, noting that vaccination is the most effective and appropriate way to eliminate diseases and is less costly than treatment according to scientific studies.The minister affirmed that regional recognition of the resilience of Sudan’s health system contributed to approval for the introduction of several vaccines in recent times, which reflects confidence in the ministry and the immunization program, including approval for vaccines to combat epidemics. He expressed pride in the “white army,” referring to health workers.He also commended the role of national experts and thanked partners from international and UN organizations for their continued support to the health sector, noting the growing role in strengthening health services and maternal health.Meanwhile, Director General of Primary Health Care Directorate, Dr. Musab Siddiq referred to the previous efforts to introduce the vaccine, which continued until reaching the current stage, describing it as a major step for the benefit and protection of newborn children. He announced that the official launch will take place next Sunday at Al-Dayat (Midwives) Hospital in Omdurman.Siddiq said the ministry, in cooperation with its partners, succeeded in introducing three vaccines during the war period, the latest being the Hepatitis B vaccine, praising the role of the minister and the immunization program despite the difficult circumstances.BH/BH
