Cultural Event Marks 70th Anniversary of Sudan–Russia Diplomatic Relations

Moscow, March 26, 2026 (SUNA) – The Embassy of the Republic of the Sudan in Moscow organized, on Thursday in cooperation with the Russian State University for the Humanities, a cultural event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sudan and Russia. The event was held at the university’s premises in Moscow.The event was addressed by the university’s rector, Sudan’s Ambassador to Russia, Mohamed Al-Ghazali Siraj, as well as representatives from the Russian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Higher Education, in addition to a representative of the Russian Federal Agency for International Cooperation.In his opening remarks, Sudan’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation underscored that the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries coincided with the same year Sudan attained its independence, reflecting the mutual significance both nations attach to one another. He noted that this anniversary carries special weight as it aligns with the 70th anniversary of Sudan’s independence. The Ambassador reviewed the trajectory of bilateral relations over seven decades, highlighting the spirit of friendship and mutual respect that has defined the partnership. He also recalled key milestones, beginning with the landmark visit of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev to Sudan in 1961, followed by the signing of numerous economic projects that formed a cornerstone of Sudan’s economy.Ambassador Mohamed Al-Ghazali conveyed the Government and people of Sudan’s profound appreciation and gratitude for Russia’s principled and steadfast support since the outbreak of the war triggered by militia aggression against the Sudanese people and their national assets. He affirmed that Russia has consistently supported Sudan, upheld its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and robustly defended it in international fora, while firmly opposing all schemes targeting the country.For their part, the rector of the Russian State University for the Humanities, along with representatives of the Russian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Higher Education and the Federal Agency for International Cooperation, commended the bilateral relations, describing them as strong and enduring ties grounded in sovereign equality and shared interests. They reaffirmed their commitment to further advancing these relations to broader horizons. The event featured a range of distinguished cultural programs. Professor Elianora delivered a lecture on Sudanese civilization, reviewing various aspects of ancient Sudanese history and the role of the two Russian archaeological missions in recent years, including their efforts in restoration and recovery of artifacts. Another lecture was delivered by the Dean of the Institute of Oriental and African Studies. The program also included Sudanese and Russian musical performances, as well as a Sudanese fashion show presented by Sudanese students in Russia.An accompanying exhibition was inaugurated, showcasing archival photographs of Sudanese ambassadors since the establishment of diplomatic relations, alongside artworks reflecting Sudan’s millennia-old civilization, the work of the Russian archaeological missions in Sudan, and vivid depictions of Sudanese landscapes and daily life. The exhibition offered a rich portrayal of Sudan’s deep-rooted heritage, cultural diversity, and way of life.The event was attended, in addition to representatives of the Russian government, by a distinguished group of scholars and researchers from leading Russian academic institutions, university faculty and students, Sudanese students in Russia, and members of the Sudanese community.
