Jakarta, March 30 (QNA) – An earthquake measuring 5.1 magnitude on the Richter scale struck the Maluku region of Indonesia on Monday.
According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake occurred 116 km east of Maluku, at a depth of 181 km.
Indonesia is regularly exposed to earthquakes, as it is located on the Pacific belt known as the Ring of Fire, where many tectonic plates meet and cause frequent volcanic and seismic activity.
In 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake struck Aceh province, triggering a tsunami and killing more than 170,000 people in Indonesia. (QNA)
