Beirut, March 30 (QNA) – Two UNIFIL peacekeepers were killed Monday in a tragic incident when an explosion of unknown origin destroyed their vehicle near Bani Hayyan in southern Lebanon.
A statement by UNIFIL indicated that two other peacekeepers were also injured in the explosion, noting that this was the second fatal incident in the past 24 hours.
UNIFIL reiterated the need for all parties to adhere to their obligations under international law and to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property at all times, including refraining from any actions that could endanger peacekeepers.
Deliberate attacks on peacekeepers constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes.
UNIFIL stated that the human cost of this conflict is far too high, and as we have said before, the violence must stop.
UNIFIL had previously announced the death of one of its peacekeepers and the serious injury of another following the explosion of a projectile at one of its positions near Adshit Al Qusayr in southern Lebanon. (QNA)
