Foreign Minister Meets UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa

Port Sudan, March 31, 2026 (SUNA) — Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi-Eddin Salim, received on Monday evening the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa, Mr. Kuang Kong.The Special Envoy stated that this marks his first visit to Sudan since assuming his mandate, noting that the visit forms part of a broader regional tour of Horn of Africa countries aimed at gaining first-hand insight into internal developments across the region.He reaffirmed the UN Secretary-General’s keen interest in achieving peace and stability in Sudan, describing it as a pivotal factor for the stability of the wider region.The meeting addressed recent political and security developments in Sudan, including violations, atrocities, and grave crimes committed by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia against public and private property.The Minister also outlined the support received by the rebel militia from sponsoring states, drawing attention to the adverse implications for regional and international security should the international community fail to adopt firm measures against states providing such groups with advanced weaponry, including strategic drones, heavy arms, as well as political and media backing.In this regard, he called upon the UN Envoy to convey the gravity of the phenomenon of mercenaries and external support to armed groups, and its far-reaching repercussions for regional and global security.BH/BH
