United Nations Reopens Headquarters in Khartoum, Signalling Resumption of Operations

Khartoum, April 2, 2026 (SUNA) – The United Nations has officially inaugurated its headquarters—known as the “UN House”—in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, alongside the reopening of the office of the United Nations Development Programme, paving the way for the resumption of its operations from the capital following the gradual restoration of normal life. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi-Eddin Salem, along with senior officials from the United Nations and the Government of Khartoum State. In his remarks, the Foreign Minister hailed the step as a “historic moment” that rarely occurs, stating: “Through this event, we send a clear message to our partners in the United Nations that we are working side by side to achieve stability in Sudan.”Ambassador Salem affirmed that the regions of Darfur and Kordofan “will be reclaimed from the grip of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia,” describing the group as a terrorist militia. He added: “We are advocates of peace. As a member of the United Nations, we join hands with its agencies and organizations to implement the Government of Hope’s peace initiative, with the aim of achieving sustainable peace.”He also called on Sudanese youth to organize themselves, take ownership of the national initiative, and assume a leading role in the post-war phase rather than waiting for political parties or coalitions. The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to peace, welcoming all international initiatives aimed at ending the conflict, while stressing that “there is no place among us for militias,” and rejecting external impositions.Furthermore, he urged the African Union to review what he described as an unjust decision to suspend Sudan’s membership, calling for corrective measures. He also appealed to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to take further constructive steps in support of stability in Sudan. The Foreign Minister commended the efforts of UN agencies operating in the country, with particular praise for the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Denise Brown, lauding her dedication and tireless work. He also acknowledged the presence of the Ambassador of Zimbabwe at the ceremony, noting that he was the only African ambassador who remained in Sudan throughout the war.BH/BH
