Damascus, April 2 (QNA) – Syria and Iraq reopened the Al Tanf-Al Waleed border crossing in a move aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and facilitating trade and the transit of goods between the two countries, after a closure of more than a decade.

The reopening included a joint field visit by the head of the General Authority for Ports and Customs in Syria, Qutaiba Badawi, and the head of the Border Ports Authority in Iraq, Omar Al Waeli.

The two sides inspected the infrastructure and operational procedures at the crossing, as well as monitoring the flow of tanker convoys and transit trucks.

Both sides emphasized the importance of the crossing in supporting trade and ensuring the smooth flow of goods and energy resources.

They stressed the continuation of coordination to develop operational mechanisms and overcome obstacles, thereby enhancing economic integration and solidifying Syria’s role as a key transit corridor for regional trade.

The opening of the crossing comes a day after the announcement that Iraqi fuel tanker convoys had begun crossing through the Tanf border towards the Banias refinery. (QNA)
