Khartoum, April 7, 2026 (SUNA) – The Ministries of Industry and Trade, and Agriculture and Irrigation, held a high-level coordination meeting to explore ways to increase Sudan’s agricultural exports, in the presence of the General Manager of the Agricultural Bank of Sudan and a representative of the Central Bank of Sudan. The meeting underscored the need for robust coordination to translate the slogan “Sudan as the World’s Food Basket” into reality. Minister of Industry and Trade, Ms. Mahasin Ali Yagoub, stated during the meeting in Khartoum on Tuesday that Sudan possesses substantial agricultural potential, including fertile land and water resources, placing the country at the forefront of agricultural nations in Africa and the Arab world. She called for harnessing this advantage and encouraging the production of export crops. She explained that the Ministry’s future plan focuses on supporting and promoting production and agro-processing for export, which would maximize the value of agricultural products and add value to them, as well as generate foreign currency revenues that contribute to stabilizing the trade balance, supporting the national currency, and strengthening the national economy. For his part, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Professor Ismat Gurashi, noted that agriculture remains the backbone of the Sudanese economy despite disruptions to production chains caused by the war and the withdrawal of areas in Kordofan and Darfur from the production cycle. He affirmed that the Ministry is working to increase production both vertically and horizontally and will strengthen coordination with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to formulate incentivizing policies that encourage investment in the agricultural sector, particularly in light of rising global demand and increasing food prices.BH/BH
