Khartoum, April 15, 2026 (SUNA) – Prime Minister Professor Kamil Idris chaired, on Wednesday in Khartoum, a meeting of the High Committee tasked with preparing an enabling environment for the return of citizens to Khartoum State. The meeting reviewed a report by the Electricity Sector Rehabilitation Committee, presented by Minister of Energy Engineer Al-Mu’tasim Ibrahim. The report outlined efforts across electricity generation, transmission and distribution, and announced the imminent inauguration of the Soba electricity substation in the coming days, which will supply the industrial area south of Khartoum. The meeting also heard a report on the efforts of the Water Sector Rehabilitation Committee, presented by Director General of the Khartoum State Water Corporation Engineer Mohamed Awad. The report detailed achievements made between March 13 and April 10, 2026, which have contributed to stabilizing and sustaining water supply in the national capital, Khartoum. It noted the installation of backup generators at Al-Manara Water Station to be used in case of power outages, and announced the upcoming entry into service of the Burri station, as well as the operation of Beit Al-Mal Water Station at full capacity. The meeting further reviewed a report by the Roads and Bridges Rehabilitation Committee, presented by Director General of the Roads, Bridges, and Stormwater Drains Authority, Mr. Mukhtar Omar Saber. In addition, the meeting examined a report by the Environmental Sanitation Committee, presented by the Secretary-General of the Higher Council for Environment, Ms. Ghada Al-Awad. The High Committee commended the efforts made by the water, electricity, roads and bridges, and environmental sanitation committees. It directed the continuation of funding for water sector rehabilitation projects, the acceleration of electricity coverage to remaining densely populated areas in Khartoum State in accordance with the approved plan, and the prompt announcement of tenders for the maintenance and rehabilitation of Al-Mak Nimir, Al-Halfaya, and Shambat bridges, in coordination with the Federal Ministry of Finance. The committee also directed that environmental sanitation be placed at the top of priorities and called for the launch of a nationwide campaign to continue sanitation efforts across the capital and other states, in coordination with the Ministry of Federal Governance and Rural Development, state walis and regional governors, and relevant entities.BH/BH
