Karak, May 19 (Petra) — The Food and Agriculture Organization of the
United Nations (FAO) and Mutah University on Tuesday discussed
strengthening cooperation in developing academic curricula and
integrating climate adaptation and sustainability concepts into
agricultural education programs.

The FAO delegation’s visit to the university comes as part of the
“Building resilience to cope with climate change in Jordan through
improving water use efficiency in the agriculture sector (BRCCJ)”
project, implemented by FAO with support from the Green Climate Fund,
in partnership with the Jordanian government and the United Nations
Development Program. The project targets governorates in the Dead Sea
Basin, namely Madaba, Karak, Tafileh, and Maan.

The project aims to strengthen climate change adaptation by improving
water use efficiency in the agricultural sector, developing more
climate-resilient water systems, supporting livelihoods and food
security, and promoting the integration of climate adaptation
concepts into policies, institutions, the private sector and civil
society.

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the findings of an
analysis of curricula and courses offered by the Faculty of
Agriculture that relate to climate change and food security. They
also discussed opportunities to develop these curricula to better
prepare students and graduates to address climate challenges and
sustainable development requirements, in line with national
priorities in the agricultural and environmental sectors.

Participants emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships
between academic institutions and international organizations to
support the development of applied agricultural education, build
youth capacities and enable them to contribute to sustainable
development and food security in Jordan.

FAO is currently implementing the seven-year BRCCJ project through
the ministries of Water and Irrigation, Agriculture, and Environment,
as well as the United Nations Development Program. The project aims
to advance climate-resilient sustainable development in Jordan and,
more specifically, increase the capacity of water management systems
and farming communities to adapt to climate change.
