The Supreme Committee for Facilitating the Return of Citizens to Khartoum State Calls for Accelerating the Restoration of Services

Khartoum, May 23, 2026 (SUNA) – The Supreme Committee for Preparing the Environment for the Return of Citizens to Khartoum State held its meeting on Saturday in Khartoum, chaired by Prime Minister Professor Kamil Idris. The meeting reviewed a report submitted by the Wali of Khartoum State, Ahmed Osman Hamza, on the rehabilitation of the water sector and how to address the impacts resulting from water supply interruptions in some neighborhoods of Khartoum. The meeting also heard a detailed report presented by the Director General of Sudan Electricity, Engineer Abdullah Mohamed Ali, on the rehabilitation of the electricity sector and the arrangements in place to address the effects of power not reaching some neighborhoods in Khartoum State.  The report addressed the emergency plan up to the end of 2026, as well as how to tackle the causes of power outages following the increased introduction of several generating units, in addition to addressing distribution problems and installing more transformers. It also noted the maintenance and reinstallation of more than (1,100) transformers in the capital, alongside continued efforts to deliver electricity to several locations in Khartoum. The Minister of Culture, Information, Antiquities and Tourism, Khalid Al-Eisir, stated in a press release that the meeting also discussed the rehabilitation of main roads and bridges, referring to the detailed report submitted by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Seif Al-Nasr Al-Tijani Haroun, on efforts to rehabilitate main roads and bridges, including the Halfaya, Mak Nimir, and Shambat bridges. In this regard, Al-Eisir announced to the Sudanese people and residents of the capital that tenders will be issued next week with full transparency, placing the matter before the public in a spirit of openness, ensuring the smooth implementation of maintenance works through qualified companies. He added that the meeting also received a briefing from the Committee for the Rehabilitation of the Water Sector, presented by the Director of the Khartoum State Water Authority, Engineer Mohamed Ahmed Awad, on efforts made to expand the water network in the capital and address all obstacles facing its work. Al-Eisir noted that the meeting commended the efforts made by the committees over the past period and pledged to remove all obstacles to ensure the continuation of work while providing the necessary resources, indicating that the Prime Minister’s Office pledged support to all relevant committees to provide the required inputs so that they can carry out their work more quickly. He said that members of the Supreme Committee agreed on the need to accelerate procedures for restoring services to the national capital, Khartoum.BH/BH
