Paris, May 26 (QNA) – Daniil Medvedev of Russia, the world No. 8, was knocked out of the French Open in the first round on Tuesday, suffering a stunning upset at the hands of Adam Walton of Australia, the world No. 97.
Medvedev failed to establish control against Walton, a wild-card entrant, ultimately losing the five-set match, 2-6, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The victory was the first of Walton’s career against a top-10 player. The 27-year-old Australian will advance to face Zachary Svajda of the United States, who defeated Alexei Popyrin of Australia in four sets, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 7-5.
In another notable match, Moise Kouame, a 17-year-old from France, claimed a striking victory in his Grand Slam debut, defeating the Croatian veteran Marin Cilic in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2, 6-1. Kouame will next face Adolfo Daniel Vallejo of Paraguay, who advanced to the second round after his opponent, Cameron Norrie of Britain, withdrew because of an injury.
Elsewhere in Tuesday’s action, Jaime Faria of Portugal defeated Denis Shapovalov of Canada in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4.
Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany beat Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in four sets, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, and Lerner Tien of the United States defeated Cristian Garin of Chile, 6-0, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2. (QNA)
