Khartoum, June 6, 2026 (SUNA) – The Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources held a Board of Directors meeting this Saturday morning at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) hall in Khartoum for the project on building capacity for transparency in climate change action.  Representative the Secretary-General of the Council, Ms. Magda Ahmed, said the project is funded by the Global Environment Facility in partnership with UNDP and implemented by the Council. She stressed ongoing cooperation with UNDP to ensure the achievement of Sudan’s commitments to global climate goals, expressing hope for the approval of the proposed plan and budget to enable implementation of remaining activities over the next 18 months. UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Surayo Buzurukova welcomed members of the project board, noting the successful completion in May of a four-day training on greenhouse gas inventory in cooperation with UNDP and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). She said the training helped build the capacity of focal points in various ministries, facilitating project implementation in 2026 and 2027. She added that the project has been extended until December 31, 2027, providing additional time to complete all interventions, noting that the extension was granted on an exceptional basis. Project coordinator Hiyam Ahmed presented the 2025 performance report, highlighting challenges faced during implementation. Project Director Dr. Bushra Hamid also presented the 2026 national work plan aimed at accelerating implementation, urging the board to approve the 2025 results and adopt the 2026 plan after discussion and amendments.BH/BH
