Addis Ababa, July 18, 2026 (SUNA) – Sudan’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Al-Zain Ibrahim Hussein, received the AU Special Envoy for the Prevention of Genocide and Other Mass Atrocities, Adama Dieng, at his office in the presence of members of the Sudanese diplomatic mission. The Ambassador was briefed by the Special Envoy on his previous mission to Sudan and his subsequent engagements through the African Union and the wider international community, including his address to the AU Peace and Security Council. The Envoy also outlined his planned activities under his mandate and his continued efforts to raise awareness of the grave violations committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia against civilians, stressing the need for accountability and drawing attention to the humanitarian situation. For his part, Ambassador Al-Zain briefed the Envoy on the latest developments in Sudan, affirming that the Sudanese Armed Forces, in all their formations, continue to consolidate control over most of the country’s territory to protect Sudan and its people. He stressed that Sudan is facing “a war against it,” rather than “an internal war,” describing it as outright aggression backed by clear and confirmed foreign support through the use of satellite-operated strategic drones and foreign mercenaries. The Ambassador called on the Envoy to engage more seriously with Sudan’s national human rights and law enforcement mechanisms to protect civilians. He also said African Union institutions had been slow to respond compared with other international bodies, such as the European Parliament, and renewed Sudan’s call for the RSF militia to be designated a terrorist organization. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Ambassador commended Adama Dieng for his objective presentation of the situation in Sudan before the AU Peace and Security Council following his recent visit to the country.BH/BH
