Cairo, July 26 (QNA) – The Arab League warned that the situation in the region is approaching a highly dangerous stage and nearing a breaking point due to the continued stalemate in the Palestinian issue on one hand, and reckless escalation and brinkmanship in the Gulf region on the other.

In a statement on Sunday, Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy said that all parties have a responsibility to preserve security and stability in the region. He added that the US administration must assume its responsibilities in this regard, especially as US President Donald Trump launched a peace plan last October aimed at ending the war in the Gaza Strip.

He noted that the second phase of the plan remains stalled nine months after its launch, while two million Palestinians in Gaza continue to live in deteriorating tents amid disease and hunger. Meanwhile, Israeli occupation government officials continue to speak of long-term settlement expansion, as Israel continues to seize more land in the Strip.

The Arab League Secretary-General called on the US President to curb the extremist ambitions of the Israeli government, which he said seeks to undermine Sharm el-Sheikh peace initiative, and to stop repeated violations in Jerusalem.

He also urged an end to the unchecked actions of settler groups, who attack and kill unarmed Palestinians in the West Bank, while pursuing efforts to eliminate the Palestinian presence through settlement expansion, continued displacement, and undermining the Palestinian Authority’s ability to provide essential services by withholding large sums of Palestinian funds.

Fahmy further called for a swift return to the understandings reached between the United States and Iran and the resumption of negotiations aimed at ending the crisis, restoring regional stability, respecting the sovereignty and interests of neighboring countries, and ensuring safe navigation through the waterways of the Arabian Gulf and Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

He stressed that the recent escalation by Iran and Houthi group against Gulf Arab states and Jordan is completely unacceptable. He emphasized that these violations and attacks must end immediately through de-escalation, a return to the diplomatic track, and full adherence to international law and legitimacy. (QNA)
