Damascus, July 26 (QNA) – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the steps taken to ease sanctions on Syria, noting that they have opened new avenues for economic recovery.

At a press conference held at the conclusion of his two-day visit to Syria, Guterres stressed that “all these sanctions must be lifted immediately,” calling on the international community to provide sustained political support, economic engagement, and practical assistance to help Syria rebuild after years of conflict.

He described the transitional phase as “a rare moment in the life of a people,” and an opportunity to open “a new chapter” in which all Syrians can see themselves as part of their country’s future. He added, “The UN stands with the Syrian people at this pivotal moment. Syrians have demonstrated extraordinary resilience throughout years of suffering, and they should not bear the burden of recovery alone.”

The Secretary-General indicated that the road ahead for Syria will not be easy, but emphasized that the country now has an exceptional opportunity to shape its future. In this regard, he called for providing the necessary support for the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of refugees and internally displaced persons.

He affirmed that the UN stands ready to support efforts aimed at strengthening accountability, transitional justice, human rights, reconciliation, and trust-building among communities, and ensuring the meaningful participation of all Syrians, including women and youth.

Guterres reiterated his condemnation of Israel’s ongoing violations of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, stating that “the Golan Heights are originally Syrian territory.” (QNA)
