Agriculture Undersecretary: Anticipatory Action and Early Warning Systems Key to Reducing Disaster Risks

A three-day consultative workshop on anticipatory action and the development of Sudan’s national roadmap for anticipatory action was launched on Monday in Port Sudan, under the patronage of the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, with the participation of representatives from government ministries and institutions, United Nations agencies, humanitarian organisations, and international and regional partners.  Addressing the opening session, Eng. Dhu Al-Bait Abdelrahman, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, stressed the importance of adopting an anticipatory action approach based on climate forecasts and early warning systems to reduce disaster risks and minimise their impact on communities and livelihoods. He highlighted the need to unify the efforts of government institutions, international partners, and humanitarian actors to strengthen coordination and develop a national roadmap that defines priorities and cooperation mechanisms. This, he said, would support the transition from responding to disasters after they occur to early preparedness and enhance communities’ ability to cope with climate-related risks and disasters.BH/BH
