Khartoum, July 31, 2026 (SUNA) – Sudan, alongside 14 other countries, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Türkiye, and Pakistan, participated on Thursday in the establishment of the Multinational Maritime Defense Alliance, in a strategic step that goes beyond the immediate military dimension toward strengthening a regional security approach. The initiative aims to enable countries of the region to assume responsibility for safeguarding their collective security and vital maritime routes without relying on external powers. For Sudan, the participation aligns with its geopolitical position as a country with an extensive coastline along the Red Sea. It reflects Sudan’s commitment to contributing to the protection of freedom of navigation, the security of international trade, and the stability of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden — waterways of significant importance to both regional and global economies. The participation also reflects Sudan’s strategic approach toward managing its Red Sea coastline as one of the pillars of an integrated development and security vision. The initiative represents a major step toward strengthening an institutional regional security framework based on partnership, shared responsibility, equal footing, and the development of collective capabilities to deter cross-border threats.
