New York, August 04 (QNA) – The United Nations announced that a committee made up of representatives of five international organizations concerned with Sudan, known as the Quintet, recently held consultations with Sudanese political parties in support of a comprehensive political process.

The Quintet includes the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the League of Arab States, the European Union and the United Nations.

“Building on exploratory consultations held in Addis Ababa in June, the Quintet engaged Sudanese civilian political leaders in recent days. Discussions continued on proposals and perspectives for advancing the political process, including through the establishment of confidence-building measures,” Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq said. 

He added that the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan Pekka Haavisto continues to engage all parties and has urged them to make concrete commitments to de-escalation and engage in genuine dialogue towards a cessation of hostilities.

Haq explained that Haavisto had contacted Sudanese Foreign Minister Muhieddine Salem on Sunday to discuss the latest developments in Sudan and preparations for the UN envoy’s upcoming visit to Khartoum.

The UN personal envoy is also continuing to communicate with RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo to discuss practical measures to reduce escalation.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been witnessing an armed conflict between the army and the RSF, which has resulted in the killing of thousands of civilians and the displacement of millions of residents. (QNA)
