Khartoum, 6 August 2026 (SUNA) – The Council of Ministers held its regular meeting on Thursday in Khartoum, chaired by Prime Minister Professor Kamil Idris, during which it reviewed reports on the current economic situation and electricity supply across the country.In a press briefing, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism Dr. Graham Abdel-Gadir said that the Minister of Finance Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim presented a report highlighting the challenges facing the national economy, including limited revenue sources and rising expenditures amid the ongoing war. He noted that the Ministry of Finance continues to operate under an emergency budget framework to manage state obligations. The Finance Minister confirmed that the ministry has continued to meet several key commitments, including payments to state employees, financial transfers to states, support for public health and education sectors, higher education, social protection programs for vulnerable families, health insurance, and free medical treatment initiatives. The report indicated that government revenues have increased through expanding the tax base without raising tax or customs rates, in addition to improved returns from state assets and other sources. It also noted continued economic recovery, with GDP growth projected to reach 9% in 2026, compared to 1.7% in 2025, alongside declining inflation rates and efforts to attract external support. The Council of Ministers commended the economic performance and praised national efforts aimed at maintaining state institutions and addressing the exceptional challenges facing the country. The meeting also reviewed a report presented by Minister of Energy Engineer Al-Mo’tasem Ibrahim on the electricity supply situation. The report covered ongoing measures to secure power for residential areas, vital service facilities, and strategic institutions. The Council was briefed on efforts to repair the technical malfunction at Merowe Dam, with the required spare parts having arrived in the country and technical teams prepared to complete the necessary repairs. The Cabinet further discussed draft laws submitted by the Ministry of Digital Transformation and Communications, including the Cybersecurity Act, the Data and Artificial Intelligence Act, and the Digital Transformation Act of 2026. The Cabinet directed that the proposed legislation undergo further review and refinement before being presented for approval at a joint session of the Council of Ministers and the Sovereignty Council.BH/BH
