Amman, Aug. 9 (Petra) – Water authorities and maintenance teams are
working around the clock to repair damage to a main air valve on the
Disi water pipeline in Jafr, Ma’an Governorate, after unknown
individuals broke the valve to illegally siphon water into tankers,
causing the loss of about 5,000 cubic meters of water daily.

The Ministry of Water and Irrigation, the Water Authority of Jordan,
the Disi Water System operator and the Jordan Water Company
(Miyahuna), along with crews from the Disi Water Company (DIWACO),
have been carrying out emergency repair work since Thursday evening
while maintaining the flow of the vital water system, according to a
statement issued by the ministry Sunday.

The ministry warned that the damage could disrupt water supplies to
several areas and reduce water allocations to others until repairs
are completed, underscoring the importance of the Disi system as a
strategic source of water for large areas of the Kingdom,
particularly Amman.

The ministry described the damage as a blatant attack on the Disi
water system and stressed that authorities are taking all necessary
measures to mitigate its impact on water supplies.

Coordination is underway with security authorities to identify and
apprehend those responsible and hold them accountable under the law,
it added.

According to ministry figures, 780 attacks on the Disi system were
recorded from the beginning of the year through the end of May,
followed by 321 cases in June and 343 in July.
