Balqa, August 15 (Petra) – The National Centre for Agricultural
Research (NCAR) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) on
Saturday discussed steps to preserve the Alia camel breed and its
genetic characteristics as part of national efforts.

The discussions took place during a meeting between NCAR Director
General Zakaria Musallam and FAO Representative in Jordan Paul Obio.

The meeting reviewed the current status of the Alia camel and its
importance as part of Jordan’s animal genetic resources, as well as
research and technical priorities for the next phase.

Musallam said that local breeds constitute a significant national
genetic asset due to their distinctive characteristics and ability to
adapt to local environmental conditions.

He urged the application of scientific research and modern
technologies to study, document and manage these breeds in accordance
with scientific principles.

He added that the NCAR is keen to develop a joint framework with the
FAO to support national efforts concerning the Alia camel and
strengthen cooperation and the exchange of scientific and technical
expertise in the conservation and management of animal genetic
resources.

Obio, in turn, urged preserving local breeds by protecting
biodiversity and enhancing the livestock sector’s ability to adapt to
climate change and environmental conditions.

He said that FAO is committed to supporting national efforts and
providing relevant technical expertise.
