Amman, August 19 (Petra) The Anti-Narcotics Department has reported
a significant increase in the number of people seeking treatment at
its addiction treatment centre over the past three weeks, following
the launch of an awareness and security campaign targeting crystal
methamphetamine.
The department said that 60% of residents at the centre are addicted
to crystal methamphetamine. Following specialist assessments, several
cases have been referred to the National Centre for Addiction
Treatment or the National Centre for Mental Health.
The three institutions continue to cooperate closely, with treatment
tailored to the individual needs of each person seeking help.
The department urged people struggling with addiction to seek
treatment without hesitation and visit the addiction treatment
centre, noting that all cases are handled with complete
confidentiality and that those seeking treatment will not face legal
repercussions.
The department reiterated the extreme dangers of crystal
methamphetamine, describing it as a highly toxic substance containing
hazardous chemicals.
It warned that the drug can cause severe health consequences,
including damage to the brain, lungs and other organs. It may cause
hallucinations and auditory and visual disturbances that can lead to
dangerous behavior and, in some cases, criminal acts.
The department urged anyone with information about the distribution,
sale or use of the substance to report it immediately by calling the
unified emergency number, 911, or through the department’s Facebook
page.
It stated that all information will be handled with the utmost
seriousness and confidentiality, while verification will be carried
out by the department’s personnel.
