Kyiv Talks as US Administration Revives Peace Push

(ONA) — US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff met with Ukrainian
President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv today as Washington renews its push to end
the war between Russia and Ukraine, now in its fourth and a half year.

The envoys arrived
from Moscow, where they held three hours of talks with President Vladimir Putin
on Saturday that failed to yield tangible progress toward resolving the
conflict.

Previous
US‑mediated rounds, backed by President Donald Trump — who pledged during his
campaign to end the war quickly — have produced little result. Trump hinted on
Friday that Washington has a new proposal, but offered no specifics.

Putin described
Saturday’s meeting as “very useful,” while a White House official
told Reuters that next steps would be announced in the coming weeks.

The envoys met Zelensky
and other senior officials in central Kyiv.

Zelensky, who
believes US engagement is critical to any peace deal, said there is a window of
opportunity before the US presidential election campaign intensifies next
summer.

In a social media
post before the envoys arrived, he said he had held a preparatory meeting with
his negotiating team and stressed that Ukraine wants to end the war.

Witkoff and
Kushner have visited Moscow several times as peace envoys, but their visit to
Kyiv marks their first as US negotiators.

After the
Ukrainian leadership had long pushed for such a visit, some optimism emerged
among Kyiv residents, as the city has endured heavy shelling in recent weeks.

In previous talks,
the two sides have differed on key issues, including the future of the Donbas
region. Russia has demanded Ukraine withdraw from a belt of cities it still
controls there, but Kyiv has refused, insisting it can hold out for years.

Ukraine views
strong security guarantees from its European allies and the United States as
essential to deterring Russia from invading again.

The Kremlin has
announced a pause in strikes on Kyiv until Monday, and Zelensky said Ukraine
would also halt strikes on Moscow. Despite this, fighting along the
1,200‑kilometre front line has continued.
