Doha, October 18 (QNA) – The National Sport Day Committee unveiled details for the 2027 edition of National Sport Day, scheduled to take place across the country in February 2027. For the first time, the event will coincide with the holy month of Ramadan, held under the theme “Ramadan .. A golden opportunity.” The initiative aims to raise awareness regarding the importance of physical activity and establish sports as a sustainable lifestyle, thereby contributing to improved public health and the adoption of healthy living habits.
The details and new identity for the upcoming edition were announced during a press conference held on Sunday at Lusail Sports Arena, attended by representatives from various partner organizations. The Committee outlined the event’s direction and programs, which are designed to encourage all segments of society to engage in sports and leverage the atmosphere of the holy month to promote physical activity and healthy behaviors.
The event’s theme reflects the Committee’s commitment to embedding sports into daily routines, even during Ramadan, to support public health and inspire individuals to make positive, lasting changes to their physical activity habits.
Advisor to the Minister of Sports and Youth (MSY) and President of the National Sport Day Committee Abdulrahman bin Musallam Al Dosari emphasized that this national occasion serves as a vital milestone for fostering community awareness regarding the importance of sports and its role in enhancing quality of life. He noted that holding the upcoming edition during Ramadan offers a unique opportunity to encourage the community to reorganize daily routines and integrate physical activity into their lifestyles throughout the holy month.
Al Dosari explained that sports are not merely a temporary pastime, or an activity linked to a specific occasion, but rather a conscious choice that reflects a sense of responsibility toward oneself and society. He noted that National Sport Day contributes to embedding a culture of consistent physical activity, which is a fundamental pillar of health and quality of life.
He added that the committee continues its efforts to broaden community participation through initiatives and events tailored to various segments of society. This aligns with the nation’s vision of building a healthy, active, and sustainable society, while strengthening its capacity to address health challenges associated with modern lifestyles.
He pointed out that National Sport Day, established by Amiri decree in 2011, which designated the second Tuesday of February each year as a national day for sports, become an entrenched national occasion. It reflects the significant role of sports within Qatari society and the state’s commitment to human health and the improvement of quality of life.
He emphasized that this occasion embodies the State of Qatar’s dedication to fostering a culture of sports and physical activity, in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030, particularly in human development, public health, and creation of a healthy, active society.
Regarding the programs for the upcoming edition, events will be held across public parks, walking, and running tracks, and various sports facilities throughout the country, allowing community members to engage in physical activities in convenient locations close to where they live. The programs encompass a diverse range of sports and activities, including walking, running, fitness exercises, team sports, such as football, basketball, and tennis, taekwondo, cycling, and swimming, alongside recreational sports activities tailored to different age groups and physical abilities.
Director of Public Relations and Communication Department at the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) Nasser Ahmed Al Khori highlighted the significance of National Sport Day in fostering awareness about the importance of physical activity. He emphasized its role in enhancing public health and preventing diseases, stressing the need for sustained efforts to establish sports as a lifestyle rather than merely a seasonal activity.
He explained that the participation of MOPH aligns with its mandate to promote health awareness and encourage the public to adopt sustainable, healthy behaviors. He noted that health teams will be present at event locations to provide medical support and ensure the safety of all participants.
The upcoming edition is expected to see broad community participation across the country, further cementing National Sport Day as a national occasion for embedding a culture of physical activity. It reflects a commitment to building a healthier and more active society, while leveraging the unique timing of the month of Ramadan to encourage individuals to continue exercising and adopt healthy habits that persist throughout the year.
