The Oman News Agency is the official source for the Sultanate’s news. It was established by Royal Decree No. (39/86) issued on 5/29/1986 and on 6/25/97AD. The Oman Institution for Press, News, Publication and Advertising was established by Royal Decree No. (43/97) ) .

Under this decree, the Oman News Agency was considered one of the institutions’ units until the issuance of the Royal Decree No. (75/2006), which stipulated its transfer to the Ministry of Information as of 7/16/2006 AD, provided that it belongs to the office of the Minister of Information, and the agency has a general manager and editor-in-chief.

Since its establishment in 1986, the agency has played the vital roles that were assigned to it, which aims to implement the Omani media policies that were derived from the vision of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimur, may God rest his soul, and the modern lofty vision of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq. God and His Protection” are among the tasks and objectives set by the Royal Decree establishing the Agency.

Undoubtedly, the Oman News Agency, given the achievements it has achieved at various levels, has been able to carry out its roles with high efficiency, thus contributing to informing the Omani citizen of all that is going on around him of important events, and disseminating accurate, clear and credible news at the local and international levels through its local and international network.

Among the most important tasks of the Oman News Agency is to cover various local events and activities and political, economic and developmental activities in various other fields in which the Sultanate witnesses or participates, whether at the local level or at the other external levels on the Gulf, Arab and international levels. The devices and media are provided with news material, photographs and various reports in both Arabic and English, and they broadcast their material via satellite through the Agency’s website on the World Wide Web (Internet).

In light of the rapid development developments that the Sultanate has witnessed and is witnessing, the Oman News Agency has worked to develop its services, starting with the formation of a network of correspondents in the various wilayats and governorates of the Sultanate and the appointment of correspondents for it in a number of Arab and international capitals, which provided it with rapid and in-depth coverage of various developments and through its introduction of the services that It ensures the arrival of Omani and international news without delay, the most important of which is the “Sabq” service adopted by Omantel Telecom.

It was also keen to launch documented pages on social networking sites such as “Twitter”, “Facebook” and “Instagram” to deliver its news service and photo services to followers whose number is increasing day by day. Via FTP and the official website, as well as converting archive images from Najtaf to digital, to be available for use, whether inside or outside the agency, and the creation of a page for Omani youth who are in school stages at all levels.
