Energy Minister Directs Measures to Increase Electricity Generation

Khartoum, Feb. 9, 2026 (SUNA) – Minister of Energy Engineer Al-Mu’tasim Ibrahim Ahmed has directed authorities to step up electricity generation to meet rising demand in Khartoum State and other states, and to cover the needs of residential, industrial, health, and agricultural sectors.The directive came during his meeting on Monday with Director General of the Sudanese Electricity Distribution Company Engineer Montaser Abdelrahman Al-Sheikh, Director of the Generation Sector Engineer Mohamed Al-Rajil, and Director General of the Sudanese Electricity Transmission Company Engineer Yassir Mohamed Al-Shazali, in the presence of Engineer Al-Sadiq Jabir, member of the Steering Committee of the Undersecretary’s Office.The meeting reviewed technical arrangements related to electricity files, priority setting, and the development of a plan to expand power generation capacity through hydro and thermal sources, alongside scaling up renewable energy projects. Discussions also covered the operational status of Kalaneib, Garri (3), and Umm Dabakir power stations, as well as measures to secure electricity facilities.Participants also examined prioritizing urgent projects to ensure full coordination with the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Sudan to secure the required financing and guarantees, and addressed overlapping mandates and the payment status of electricity interconnection projects with Egypt and Ethiopia.BH/BH
