GENEVA, July 1, 2026 (SUNA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi-Eddin Salem, met on Wednesday with the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Amy Pope, during his visit to Geneva. The meeting discussed ways to strengthen the partnership between the Government of Sudan and the International Organization for Migration, particularly in the areas of supporting voluntary returns, reintegration, and early recovery in safe areas witnessing an increasing number of citizens voluntarily returning to their homes. The Minister affirmed that creating the conditions for voluntary return is a top national priority for the Government of Sudan, stressing the importance of transitioning from emergency humanitarian response to supporting stability and rehabilitating basic services in areas of return in a manner that preserves the dignity of citizens and contributes to consolidating community stability. He also briefed the IOM Director General on the humanitarian and field developments in the country, including the situation in El Obeid and the Kordofan regions, as well as the targeting of civilian service facilities by strategic drones. He warned of the consequences of any further escalation aimed at disrupting the growing movement of voluntary returns. For her part, Ms. Amy Pope reaffirmed the International Organization for Migration’s commitment to continuing its support for Sudan and enhancing cooperation with the Government in the areas of displacement tracking, support for returnees and host communities, and mobilizing the partnerships required to address humanitarian and development needs. The two sides agreed to continue coordination and joint efforts to support sustainable voluntary returns, advance early recovery, and link humanitarian action with long-term solutions in line with Sudan’s national priorities.BH/BH
