Archaeology Museum: A Mirror of Türkiye’s Civilizational Legacy
Istanbul, 23 Jun (ONA) — The Istanbul
Archaeology Museum stands as one of the Turkish most significant cultural
landmarks, showcasing through its rich and diverse collections pivotal moments
of ancient human history while highlighting the succession of civilizations
that flourished on Turkish soil over millennia.
Established in 1891 during the Ottoman era in
the Sultanahmet district, the museum comprises three main sections housing rare
artifacts from various civilizations including the Hittite, Greek, Roman,
Byzantine, and Islamic periods. Its collections feature coins, jewellery,
manuscripts, historical photographs, and other archaeological treasures.
Aydin Zafar, Media Officer at Istanbul
Metropolitan Municipality, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the museum ranks
among the world’s most important institutions for its priceless documentation
of intersecting civilizations throughout history. He emphasized its status as a
primary reference for scholars studying Anatolian and Middle Eastern history.
The museum organizes exhibits chronologically
within specialized galleries, offering visitors a comprehensive educational
experience. Its authentic Ottoman architectural design enhances the venue’s
distinctive historical character.
Housing over 800 catalogued artifacts
alongside relics from Abrahamic faiths, the collection reflects the region’s
religious and cultural diversity. The museum attracts substantial international
visitors as both a cultural hub and source of inspiration for understanding
shared heritage through scientific and humanistic lenses.
Continuing its civilizational mission, the
Istanbul Archaeology Museum preserves historical treasures while fostering
cross-cultural understanding through its displays of deeply rooted,
multifaceted heritage.
