the close of a volatile trading session today, though gains were capped by a
decline in chip stocks amid profit-taking by investors.The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 132.47
points, or 0.33%, to close at 39,821.28.The broader Topix index finished 11.62 points, or
0.41%, higher at 2,828.16.In currency markets, the US dollar strengthened by
0.19% against the yen, trading at 146.85.Meanwhile, the yield on 10-year Japanese government
