AMMAN, August 1 (Petra) — Jordanians marked the forty-ninth
anniversary of the inauguration of Al-Shaheed Memorial (The Martyr’s
Memorial) on Saturday, commemorating the fallen heroes who sacrificed
their lives in defense of the Kingdom’s security, stability, and
dignity.

Inaugurated on July 25, 1977, as part of the Kingdom’s silver jubilee
celebrations under the late King Hussein bin Talal, the memorial
stands as a national landmark dedicated to preserving the legacy of
military martyrs. Following a comprehensive modernization and
redevelopment project, the site reopened in 2016 to expand its
mission in documenting modern Jordanian history and the heritage of
the Arab Army.

Situated on an elevated site within Al-Hussein Youth City in Amman,
the museum chronicles the evolution of the Jordanian state and the
armed forces from the Great Arab Revolt onward. Its exhibits feature
historical weaponry, military vehicles, uniforms, archives, and
dedicated wings detailing foundational milestones, national
independence, and key battles fought in defense of the homeland and
Arab causes.

The architectural design incorporates profound Islamic and symbolic
motifs. The visitor path ascends gradually toward the central
memorial plaza, symbolizing honor and ultimate sacrifice, while the
surrounding grounds feature an olive tree representing the enduring
legacy of the martyrs.

Beyond functioning as an architectural museum, Al-Shaheed Memorial
serves as an educational and historical institution designed to
instill values of patriotism, loyalty, and historical awareness
across generations. The site regularly hosts thousands of domestic
visitors, foreign delegations, and military officials annually.

Marking the anniversary, Director General of the Jordan News Agency
(Petra), Fairouz Mubaideen, visited the memorial in Amman, where she
received a briefing on its educational mission, its role in
documenting the sacrifices of the Jordan Armed Forces, and its
efforts to preserve the nation’s collective historical memory.
